Color: Black Mingo Chert is a mottled white, light tan, and gray.

Texture: 

Luster: Dull to vitreous

Translucency: Opaque to semi translucent

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Highly fossiliferous "silicified shell hash" including diagnostic mollusk fossils.

Patina: 

Heat Treatment:

Black Mingo Chert is associated with the Lang Syne Formation of the Black Mingo Group of South Carolina.  Occurs as beds, boulders, and nodules with primary outcroppings occurring along Black Mingo Creek, along the west banks of the Congaree River, Sparkleberry Quarry on Lake Marion, Sumpter County, South Carolina, Wateree River in Calhoun County, and Tombs Field Gully on Lang Syne Platation south of Little Beaver Creek.  Also found along the South Carolina Coast.
